Back to Basics

BloggerToday, I sat down to write a few pages worth of interview questions for our interview process tomorrow. Of course, many of my questions test an applicant’s technical aptitude. Having been in the IT field now for more years than I care to remember, it reminded me how important the basics of our job really are.

I hate to admit the number of times I had to look up a correct technical definition or review my basic troubleshooting skills. I don’t know. Maybe it’s because those basic skills come without thinking now and terms are fully understood. Maybe it’s the fact I am more tied up in advanced routing or more advanced deployments. Whatever the reason, this process has reminded me how golden those basic skills that culminate through great teachers and hands-on experience truly are…

SaaS – For Real?

BloggerThis whole SaaS has intrigued me the last few months. Hosted Exchange, SharePoint, off-site cloud backups, etc. My reservations are double forked: 1) Do I REALLY want to send my businesse’s data to some unknown network; especially through the Internet? 2) As a VAR whose business depends on direct sales of IT services and equipment, can I really survive on a few dollars per sale?

The majority of my customers are SMB clients and I can see where SaaS could dramatically help their overall IT costs but what about service? If an issue arrives will they be directed to some foreign country and spend three hours on an issue I could have taken care of in one? Is this another example of the “big boys” trying to conquor all?

I am sure SaaS has it’s place, I am just unsure where that place is today…

Blogs, Blogs, Blogs

BloggerRemember when Blogs really took off? When everyone rushed to set up their own blogs? Never in a million years did I ever think I would be blogging. For one, I am NOT a conversationalist; just ask my wife!  Yet here I am, feeling the need to express my thoughts on all things IT (and some others). Why? I keep asking my self the exact same thing and have come to the conclusion this is going to be my outlet. I quit smoking a short time ago, quit drinking years ago and felt this would be the perfect vise…Now what do I have to ramble on about?

I have been in the IT field for years and I currently work as the IT Manager for a regional ISP. I oversee the day to day of our corporate network as well as our contracted IT Division. I work with the best teams anyone in this field could ask for…Many thanks to everyone I work with.
